Butterfly id

Pomona, CA

Hi. I need help to identify a butterfly. I found this dead butterfly in my garden. I have never seen it before. The wingspan is between 3 to 4 inches.

I believe you have a Spinx Moth - also called hummingbird moths because of their size. I hate to tell you this but the caterpillar stage of this moth is a Tomato Horn Worm.

It is indeed a butterfly, not a moth, from the antennae.

I'm no butterfly expert but I imagine the eyespots on the hind wings would tip someone off as to what it is.

There is a forum here called "BugFiles Pictures Discussion Forum" (though obviously, it's not a bug either) where people post all sorts of butterflies, moths, etc. for IDs:

Didn't notice the wing spots. Look at this one: Black Witch Moth (Ascalapha odorata)

You're right, Daisy. Sorry to have misled the discussion. (How come it doesn't have brushy antenna?!? Well, it doesn't have clubs on the ends, at least, so I must remember that.)

Thank you, Daisy and Altagardener. I didn't even think about it being a moth. I google black witch moth and I think that is it. We do have two fig trees. Thank you for your help.
