A friend of mine found several of these insects in her home and she's worried because she has a young child in the house. Can you help me identify it and tell me whether she should be worried?

No need to worry - this is a short-snouted/broad-nosed weevil in the subfamily Entiminae; might be a black vine weevil - http://ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/black-vine-weevil
