Preventing Powdery Mildew on Sqaush?

Silver City, NM

This year Id like to Prevent powdery mildew BEFORE it starts, using natural products. Last year I lost the battle --even tho I started at their first appearance and worked my butt off with milk blends and other home remedies at great expense and time. Does anyone know any remedies for prevention that really work--without any harmful chems? Plus, this is already the wettest year in my 20 yr old garden, and a deluge of rain is expected.
TY. :)

I do several things which seem to be helpful in preventing mildew and fungus on my plants. The first is that I start everything from seed. Too many unwanted things seem to come in on nursery plants. The second is that I water early in the day so that the plants don't go into the cool evening with moisture on the leaves. As much as possible, I try to water from below. In containers that means there's a reservoir at the bottom. In the garden, soaker hoses keep water off the leaves. And, finally, I always mulch my plants. It helps them retain water in the soil and it also keeps stuff from splashing up from the soil onto the leaves. Here in the northeast, I use partially decomposed leaves from the previous fall and/or seaweed as my mulch. Not sure what you'd use in NM, but I'm sure you know :) One other thing is that I wouldn't plant anything in the same soil that's susceptible to the powdery mildew. Good luck and I hope this helps some.

Thanks for the reply Liz. Have done all you mentioned--diligently, yr after yr. As mentioned above, we are entering rainy season--full monsoons. Daily deluge--from above, not below. LOL.

Perhaps buy one of those car shelters, and use clear plastic instead of the white top.
