Are there red cultivars of Tree Lilacs? Is this what I found here in a stranger's yard?
Tree Lilac (Red)?
There may be a Lilac with reddish flowers or foliage grown in a tree form - but you ain't got it.
Lilac (Syringa sp.) has opposite arrangement of simple leaves. Your plant there has clearly alternate arrangement.
This plant is a reddish foliaged selection of Cotinus coggygria - the European Smoke Tree.
Awesome! Thanks for your help VV!
You are quite welcome. Keep exploring - we'll be here to assist.
Exploring is my favorite thing to do. I just don't want to be arrested creeping around people's yards! lol.
Just wear prominently your Daves Garden Plant Inspector badge...
I need one of those, where can I purchase a badge?
