What is this? The hardware cloth it is climbing is half inch squares. My cat discovered it, but was too cautious to do anything but look at it and maybe poke it with her paw. Sorry for the iPhone pic. Thanks.
CLOSED: Very large black beetle
This is a long-horned wood-boring beetle in the subfamily Prioninae. Their larvae usually tunnel in tree roots or stumps.
Wow, long-horned beetle and long horned bees in my other thread! Who would have thought! Do you know if they tunnel live tree roots or decaying wood?
