I learned long ago that it's good to be early with fungicides because they won't kill already established fungus. But what does "won't kill" mean? Does it mean that leaves with one tiny black spot will eventually get covered, turn yellow and fall off? Or does it just mean that existing black spots won't go away?

What is meaning of "won't kill fungus?"
Whatever the product is that you are using won't kill fungus. There are lots of products that do, depending upon what type of plant is affected.
Sorry, DaisyPlantlady, I don't understand your answer. I probably wasn't clear with my question. I wasn't saying anything at all about the behavior of a product that I'm using. What are the products that will "kill fungus" that you allude to? And if there are already black spots on a life, can the life survive after application of the product? Or will it eventually turn yellow and die?

Nothing will fix the black spots - those are dead spots in the leaves.
If the fungicide you are using doesn't kill fungus, does it prevent fungus? Read the label or tell me what you are using and I will read the label.
Also, what type of plant are you treating?
And, why do you think the plant has a fungus? It could be a virus or some other black spot causing problem.
