Trying to figure out what this spider is. I've lived in Okinawa, Japan for over 25 years and have NEVER seen a spider like this. I'm used to the common wood spider and the huntsmen spider but this was a new one for me and my wife, who is Okinawan born and raised. We just came out of a Typhoon where about 10 large wood spiders took refuge in our open basement for the duration. After the typhoon passed we went downstairs to clean up and this spider was down there. It seemed to be making an egg sac. It has black legs and a red body with black markings on the body which made it look a bit like a strawberry. The body portion is just about an inch in size.
I have 'issues' with spiders, so these are the best pics I could take...sorry.
Any help in identifying would be greatly appreciated!!
Unknown spider...can't find any info on the net
The good news is that this is a harmless (to humans) orb-weaving spider. The bad news is that I have been unable to pin a name on it... :-(
That's great info and a great start, thanks!! I'll search a bit more using 'orb-weaver' as my base.
Hi again...still trying to figure it out. Is "Meta bourneti" a possibility?
Very unlikely, as that species is photophobic and thus usually found only in very dark places such as caves, mines, etc.
