Betula nigra 'Shiloh Splash'

Eau Claire, WI(Zone 4a)

Anyone have experience with this variegated River Birch? This tidbit from Buchholz & Buchholz: "A green and white variegated small tree or large shrub. The dazzling leaves are entertaining in summer, and the exfoliating cream to peach colored bark adds winter interest. Prefers full sun in well-drained soil. 8' tall x 4' wide in 10 years. Hardy to -30 degrees. USDA zone 4."

Entertaining? Can't say I've ever read that word in a plant description before. I wonder what it does to entertain? Well, if mimes are entertainers, then I suppose a River Birch could be as well. What I'm really wondering is how it holds up under actual Midwest garden conditions. We're having more of a Great Britain spring, but this has to end at some point and then we'll be back to a typical grinding Midwest summer.

Does the bark compare favorably to B. n. 'Fox Valley'? Is reversion an issue? Does anyone really believe it will be '8 x 4' after 10 years? I mean, c'mon!

I'll hunt up my May 2015 images of really healthy and vigorous specimens at the Boone County Arboretum in Burlington KY.

That would be great -- thanks. We've got a 'Fox Valley', but thinking of adding this one. A veritable echo effect if you will. Listen to me, I sound like Penelope Hobhouse. I need a plant addiction group intervention.

We here can intervene to make you MORE like her. But perhaps that's not what you meant...

It's not what I meant, but maybe it's what I should've meant. :)

Lol Pistil, you are a pistol too...
Ha ha, I like it.

Pseudo, you're doing great, continuity is good. That's really hard to accomplish when you really want at least one of everything.
