CLOSED: carpet beetle?

Canton, OH

I am seeing these pop up all over my apartment, dead and alive. It just looks like a small all-black seed, not a lot of distinguishing detail...you can't see in the picture that there is 1 vertical line on its back (as if its 'shell' is 2 pieces put together). The bug is very small and relatively flat,, they are slow and easy to kill, don't seem to fly, and haven't bitten to my knowledge. Do they require pest control?

This might be a black carpet beetle or a close relative. If you have an infestation, you should also be finding their larvae at/under edges of carpets or any place where accumulations of dead insects may be found (behind baseboards, older light fixtures, etc.); they look like this: http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/fabric/black_carpet_beetle02.jpg
If you do have an infestation, see http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/pdf/2103.pdf for control recommendations.

Thank you..glad to confirm they arent bedbugs (I knew they didnt look like any of the bb pics ive seen but was still paranoid).I looked where I found the dead ones and found larvae...I've been vacuuming the area several times per day and I seem to be seeing fewer. Will continue to follow the instructions on that info sheet aND get rid of clutter that might give them places to hide. Sorry to have asked a non gardening question, but this looks like a great, knowledgeable forum
