My neighbor gave me this tomato to Ask-A Dave's-Gardener about. Neither of us has ever known this to happen. She had it on a counter for a couple of days after buying it, now noticed the new little plants.
Anyone ever seen this? What has happened different than usual?
Tomato seeds sprout in tomato
Which tomato is it? There are a couple of them that will do that. Dont eat it. Tomato forum is probably quickest place to get heads up on that..
That happens with the Costco tray tomatoes that are hot house grown in Canada now and again. We eat them and I have (so far) lived to tell about it. Unfortunately the tomatoes are past prime, flavor-wise, at this point.
I havent eaten them that far gone, but you could tell the seeds were sprouting.
Well the ones we've eaten aren't actually growing tomatoes...just have sprouted seeds inside. I think I'd pass once the tomato turned into a self-contained planter.
I have seen tiny green seed leaves sprouted in a cut tomato, home grown or produce stand, I forget... but yeah this one is a planter now haha!
That's just weird. Please, repost it on the tomato forum I would love to see the responses.
Wow! Very cool! I know what I'm going to do with my spare tomatoes now. I can image this happening with a rotting tomato, but not a new fresh tomato. I wonder what causes this. I'm taking this as a challenge to see if I can do this.
PS. I realize this is an old thread, but it popped up as a related thread to my thread, and when I read it, I couldn't resist commenting.
Good luck with it!
