I am losing two large redbuds to canker. These trees provide shade to my climbing hydrangea, which grows below their canopy on a northern exposure wall. When the redbuds are gone can the climbing hydrangea survive? Anything I should do to enhance its chances?

Yes! Take cuttings to root and also do some air layering or simple layering and start growing it on another structure or tree.
