Hi, I've recently purchased a new fake-leather sofa from a shady place and placed it in a balcony - Also, My other balcony near my bed-room is having a pigeon nest above it. I'm getting rid of the pigeons today by a professional. And I started seeing tiny bugs in my bed room. I saw they were coming from the balcony right near to a pigeon feces.
In this sofa which is located on the other balcony which is very close to the first balcony (same side, different rooms) I started seeing these small bugs - I will try to get a better picture of it
But i'm not sure if these are bed bugs or something else, maybe one of the experts here could help me out recognizing.
Thanks for ANY help.
Is this a bed bug?
This appears to be a bird mite; you may see more of these once the pigeons have been removed. In the absence of their hosts, they eventually will die out, but you may experience some 'nibbles' by them in the meantime, see http://ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/bird-mites
You were right flapdoodle. Though I have another question (In the end of the post)
This is what eventually happened - I think it's good for other people that experience this issue to learn from.
The pigeon guy came and took away the birds - He was also bit by some pigeon lice - And while talking to him some lice came on me.I went crazy.
I called an exterminator to eliminate pests - He came an hour later and sprayed the entire house and the area outside the house where the nest was at - there was a huge dose of lice there.
This is not the end of the story though. I told him about that couch with the mites - he also recognized them as mites and torn up the bottom of the couch we found a lot of eggs there - he sprayed the entire couch from all the sides bottom to up.
My apartment is very small - And the couch is at the balcony - I hope this will solve the problem for good.
I will give it 2 days to sit still while i'll sleep someplace else - And when i'll come back i'm going to wash the entire place with water + bleach and vacuum the place and the couch to eliminate any left overs.
Is there a way to prevent mites from getting on the couch once more?
Do mites are easy to kill? I mean - Are they like those bed bugs that are hard to get rid of? And what about pigeon lice? Is there a way to prevent them also?
Thanks for your help!!
I'm a bit leery of pesticide application in the confines of your apartment as I believe that would put you a greater health risk than that posed by the mites/pigeon lice. Neither of those pests will survive for very long in the absence of their hosts, and they do not transmit any human diseases. Also, I'm a bit curious about the couch mites. If those were bird mites, they would not have laid any eggs there, and mite eggs in general are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Just for your peace of mind, routine vacuuming with a machine equipped with a HEPA filter (which most vacuums these days appear to use) should suffice to prevent future problems.
I am on the opposite extreme. I like birds and allow native species to nest on our house regardless of risk. In 2012, we got bird mites in our bedroom from the nest on the porch. From experience, online searching was the worst thing we could do. We were freaking out for nothing. We finally called the county's extension office. I recommend you do the same for peace of mind and to learn what those mites are on your couch.
After a number of calls and transfers, my husband talked to an entomologist (studier of insects) who told us that the extreme heat we were having were causing the mites to escape the outdoors. It was bad enough for them to leave their food source.
At the time we used a chemical which removed the problem inside before the nest was removed when the young fledged. Since then we have learned of more natural means of dealing with them, but haven't needed to. In 2013, 2014, and now this year, we have Barn Swallows on our porch and so far, have not had mites of any kind in the house. They were an annoyance, but really those sites that use fear just added to the problem.
Update:
I threw the couch away - It was filled with those fuckers. I recently purchased it so I should have learned not to buy from shady places - the probably kept the couch some place dirty with those damn mites.
Once again you were right flap.
Thanks.
