Genetically confused caterpillar?

Just saw this poor guy at the park. Seems to have two conjoined incomplete bodies?

Looks connected at back ends, and stays together when it moved onto a stick i put next to it.

These are mating cecropia moths (Hyalophora cecropia) in the family Saturniidae -

Lul. That makes alot more sense. The likeness of it's thorax? to a caterpillar and it lieing around not fleeing threw me off. I feel naive now ; ).
