I live in Zone 5 (northern NJ) and am trying to grow cerinthe. In the past I have tried direct sowing but the plants never grew to the flowering stage. I started some from seeds indoors this year and planted them in the garden about 2 weeks ago and they are just starting to take off. has anyone had experience with this plant in this Zone? How long before they bloom ? Will I get flowers this year?
Growing Cerinthe from seed
I have never grown them from purchased seeds, but they do sometimes overwinter here, and occasionally volunteer. They do bloom the same year, but here they get going very early so have a very long growing season.
Yes, you should get flowers this year from an indoor start. It's worked for me in a much shorter season than yours. Be sure to pick some seeds for next year. Self-sown seeds here in my yard don't necessarily get a long enough season to bloom.
