CLOSED: Strange looking bug found in the Blue Mountains NSW

sydney, Australia

Hi there guys!

I made an account so I could put this picture up to figure out what it actually is. In my 26 years I have never seen a bug that looks anything like this one. I was walking my dog and I saw a white (almost glowing) thing floating in mid air. On first inspection I thought it was a big cobweb with something caught it in but as I walked up I realized it was flying. I walked over to it and it flew up next to me and then landed on the arm of my jacket. It had beautiful light purple wings and it's body was thin and long kind of like a butterfly. The thing that stood out though was it's spikey (but soft looking) tail that looked like hundreds of white soft hairs sticking out of it's back. Does anyone know the name of this bug? I would like to know so I can look up high quality photos of this beautiful little thing.

The picture quality isn't fantastic as I am using a temporary phone.

This appears to be a male 'bird of paradise fly' in the family Margarodidae - see https://www.flickr.com/photos/46188549@N05/4646643473 for an example (perhaps not the exact same species as yours).

thank you so much you are right! although all the images i find seem to be very dull compared to the one that I saw... it was a really lovely purple and it's wings were also colored.
