Planting asparagus from pot?

Novi, MI

Newbie here. Please, forgive me, if this has been asked and answered. :P I've not had much luck searching for this particular question.

I've bought asparagus (Purple Passion) from a garden store in a 1.6 gallon pot (full plant with ferns about 3 feet tall or so).

My question is whether I can transplant this like I would transplant nearly any other potted plant? By that I mean: dig a hole bigger than the pot, remove plant and place in hole, backfill. (The plan is to prepare a raised bed for the asparagus.)

Thanks in advance!

That's an odd way to sell asparagus! Yes, but plant it deeper than in the pot. Amend the soil well you want it to grow vigorously for years.
But be aware that with just one clump, you may have just a spear or two a day or week. depends on how full it is right now, and how well you feed and water it.

:-) Thanks, Anne! That's what I thought when I saw it because I had only ever heard of planting asparagus from crowns or by seeding. (My dad has always had a thriving bed of asparagus and each time they moved he brought some to the new houses as crowns.)

I figured I'd try with one of these pots and see how it went. So far, so good. It's been in the ground for nearly two weeks and still looks happy, so I'm optimistic!
