Spring/Summer Gardens 2015 Part 3

Anna, IL(Zone 6b)

Garden pictures look impressive - great variety. Like the size of those tomatoes,

Salsa looks yummy, too.

I finally made it out to check my zucks, cuxs and beets. Hope I can find time to pick the beets tomorrow and can some pickled beets. No cux's yet. jmc - My beets are Detroit variety and were planted mid/late April.

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

A neat looking yellow / orange bloom showed up in my mixed flower patch today, the foliage is very "airy" looking with a blue green coloring, any of you guys recognize it?

A lot of cucumbers starting to come up on my plants now

Tried to get a shot at another angle of those massive tomatoes that i posted yesterday

And I see a little female bloom finally showing up on my zucchini plant

jmc1987 wonderful job on your veggies !
My garden is in full production right now.
Tons of tomatoes ... and lot to do in the kitchen .. my freezer is going to be full real soon.
My plastic snakes are working and the birds are leaving the tomatoes alone.
Tons of peppers and eggplants are starting to produce more often.
A few cucumbers and squashes.
I just transplanted out okra. The Chinese Long Beans I directed seeded 10 days ago are already 10" tall.
Swiss Chard is starting to germinate outside(after 2 weeks)

What a great gardening season !

JMC1987,
I can see from the scale of the stake and the stalk that those tomatoes are MASSIVE!!!

Wow! What variety is that? Might need to discuss a seed trade, LOL (for REAL!!!)

Fantastic growing there!!

P.S. I'm about to seriously start putting flowers in the yard. My 13-year-old nerdy nephew knows nothing about anything. Caught in the middle of custody issues for so many years, and, finally getting some stability. Trying to hang out with him to teach him some life skills. Only 5 short years to fill him with what he hasn't gotten to date.

Anyway, I told him I'd like to teach him some shop skills (like I've got that many, LOL), how to build simple things, and anything else he'd be interested in learning/doing. Then, I asked him what he'd like to do. And, he said,

wait for it....

wait some more for it....

OK......

He'd like to PLANT FLOWERS!!!

So, his Auntie Linda will be starting seeds for some fall annuals he can plant out between Oct-Dec. And, his Auntie Linda will be calling on JMC1987 to fill in the flower growing gaps, LOL!!!

Hugs, Ya'll!

The neat looking yellow/orange bloom resembles a California Poppy. That is what I would say it is.

Brenda, I agree with you I think it's a CA poppy, their foliage has a blueish coloring to it...

Well i should still have seed to send your way, especially after some of these in my garden space go to seed.

As far as those tomatoes go, i got them in a trade and all that i know about them is that the DG member called them "old kentucky" although i get mixed results when i try to google search that

I just tried to look it up on PFs. What happened to PFs? It was easier to google it. Lol

Jmc got the seeds in a trade so I don't think they know what the tomato looks like.

Linda, I can't believe it's been hot enough there that your tomato plants have declined. We've barely hit 90 but the humidity is doing me in. Ive never seen so many bugs.

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

well one thing is for sure, we will have better luck confirming it once those suckers ripen and get their coloring, lol.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Lisa,
I think the monsoon rains played a big part. The tomatoes were very slow growing. I actually have an entire row of new tomatoes growing straight across at about the 6' mark, however, the stinkbugs have moved in with a vengeance, and are attacking these fruits. Also, now that the heat and humidity has set in the vines are yellowing, one by one. I see it moving through the patch...

I'll take cuttings this evening, and start some to root (did the yard yesterday instead of taking the cuttings...my mower was bogging down something awful...grass was so tall I went ahead and raked the WHOLE yard and had fresh grass for the Geobin!).

I received the Marglobe seeds I requested, and will plant an entire bed of these to get a crop to make the roasted tomato sauce.

All in all, I'm happy with what I got. I hadn't had a good crop of tomatoes since 2013, so, I feel like I'm back on track. Nothing I could do about the lack of sunshine, LOL!

Hugs!

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

Boy, i had to move one of my potted tomato plants off of the back deck and into the yard, the heat build up on the deck combined with the brutal sun and these hot days has literally boiled the tomatoes that were on the plant, all soft and shriveled up.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

We're averaging 96-98° days here, with a "feels like" index of 100°.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

The weather has been extra strange this year. There is a cold front coming thru this weekend, now that's weird!

Is there anything you can do abt the Stinkbugs?

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

the stinkbugs have started showing up here as well. I dont care if it smells foul or not, when i see them on my plants they get the big squish, lol.

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

the tomatoes and cukes have started pouring in. And the blackberries are starting to pick up to make up for where the black raspberries are slowing down.

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

duh, a photo might would help, lol

Oh, also i got some of these in the mail just today :) Giving them a day or two indoors to acclimate from being in that dark box, then they will be moved to full shade outdoors, and then ultimately to dappled shade / sun

A BLUE flower???!!! I thought there were no true blue flowers???!!!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I've never heard that. I've seen blue wildflowers....

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

supposedly they say that plants make a mixture of pigments that give off the effect of it being blue, without really being an actual blue, but either way, they are darned pretty and im sticking with that excuse ;) lol

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

I hope i am not over posting, lol. But here is todays harvest. One thing is for sure about the jimmy nardello peppers, i have discovered that they are THE pepper for pizza's, forget bell peppers! lol!

My coneflower that i pampered over the summer finally has some blooms, sadly it looks like something has munched most of the petals off of two of the 3 flowers.

Also i have another mystery flower, to me it is screaming some type of Rudbekia, but i always thought they were second year blooming from seed, not first year?

And the sweet potatoes are more than halfway across their planting bed now.

you know what, i just took a really close look at that coneflower photo, and i see a japanese beetle! Caught red handed it seems!

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

You mean to tell me that I should've lined my sweeties up in one row on one end of the bed only, instead of placing the 15 seeds that I spaced out so carefully all over the bed, and now have to tip the vines to keep them from running into each other???

Is THAT what you're trying to tell me, LOL???!!

shoot!

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

lol just my own experiment there, and as they begin to make multiple vines i just coax them into growing in the same direction as the main vine.

really its my first time EVER growing them
