I stopped and took pics of these two Cypresses (I think) on a neighborhood street. There coloring was interesting. What do I have here?

I don't know my gold foliaged False-cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera, I think) from a hole in the ground, but that's likely what you have there.

I think the first one is an old specimen of c. obtusa Tetragona Aurea. The Google images usually show the compact little guys, but this one's all grown up. If they're too shaded out, branching becomes sparse.

This may not be right, but I think Hinoki cypress is another name for just chamaecyparis obtusa & it's cultivars, while false cypress is the common name for whole chamaecyparis gang (obtusa, pisifera, lawsoniana, thyoides ...). I think c. nootkatensis got renamed and booted out of the clan recently.

Hinoki Cypress = Chamaecyparis obtusa

Sawara Cypress = Chamaecyparis pisifera

Also
Lawson's Cypress = Chamaecyparis lawsoniana
Atlantic White Cypress = Chamaecyparis thyoides
Formosan Cypress = Chamaecyparis formosensis
Fujian Cypress = Chamaecyparis hodginsii

Nothing false about them, they're all real plants!

Very funny. It would be interesting to spend a day at a major ICBN conference. I suspect about 95% of it would be over my head, but I can think of worse ways to spend a day.

Good point. I've never liked plant names beginning with "False"...or "Pseudo" for that matter. Oh oh, I feel like I might be stepping into something. Anyhow, False Larch is a good example of what I mean. It's way too negative for such a beautiful tree. Just out of curiosity, Resin, what might you name Pseudolarix if it were up to you?
