I am trying to help a friend find a type of Iris she remembers from the home where she grew up. She describes it as follows. Do you have any idea what type of Iria she is referring to?
Try to imagine a variety of iris that is kind of between the standard bearded variety in your lovely photo, and the graceful delicacy of Japanese iris. The flowers and leaves had the SHAPE of the bearded iris, but the flowers were about 50-60% of the size of the standard beards. They bloomed prolifically, with 4-5 blooms open on a stem at a time. The plants were about 15-20% taller than beards, with proportionally more slender leaves. The flowers were predominantly white, with what looked like purple blanket-stitching around the edges of all of the petals, and some pale violet in the throat of the flower. And fragrant? In the early morning and evening their fragrance lit up the yard like honeysuckle!
Looking for a specific type of Iris
Iris 'Madame Chereau' is an heirloom Iris from the nineteenth century. This sound like it. Look in this catalog also at Iris 'Swerti', very similar, also fragrant, but sounds a bit shorter.
