I posted a photo of a spider egg sac a while back. They finally hatched and I'm dying to know what they are. I looked up "black widow spiderlings" but there were so many photos that looked different, I couldn't get a definitive answer. I'm in Sacramento, CA and the eggs hatched today or yesterday. To me, they look like orb weavers. If they are, I'll let them go. If they're not and they're black widows, I'm going to humanely dispose of them. Can anyone tell what they are? If I need to keep them longer to find out what they are, what should I feed them? Thanks :-)
My spider eggs hatched!!
I suspect that that these spiders may be in the genus Steatoda, which belongs to the same family (Theridiidae) as black widows. Some Steatoda species are referred to as 'false widow spiders' and can have a very painful (but not dangerous) bite. I have had personal experience with the painful bit. See http://www.spiders.us/files/steatoda-grossa-15.jpg for some Steatoda egg sacs.
Thank you... We've seen the false black widows around... I'm going to research to see if they're beneficial or not. I appreciate your help. :-)
