Listen to my story. One day, I arrived home at this bug on the peephole of my apartment's door (the outside). It was interesting how it neatly placed itself so centrally. It looks like it has wings, but it did not fly away when I opened the door and ignored my attempts to scare it away by banging the door. I ended up killing the bug. Here's where things get interesting. About two weeks later, the SAME EXACT type of bug was at the SAME EXACT LOCATION. On my peephole. I freaked out and told people about this mini robot on my door. I killed the bug again. Now it is about two or three months later, and IT IS BACK. AT THE SAME LOCATION. UNFLINCHINGLY ON TOP OF MY PEEPHOLE. People...I was joking at first, but I truly am starting to believe this is no ordinary bug, or a bug at all. I didn't kill it this time and when I got back from the bar last night, the bug was gone. But what kind of bug is this? And why do all it's descendants have a fetish for my peephole?
P.S. The bug has some green and purple look to it...
Extremely Odd Behavior
This is a wasp, it appears to be in the family Sphecidae (thread-waisted wasps) whose members are parasitic on other insects and spiders. Unfortunately, I have no idea as to why it would be attracted to your peephole.
Perhaps it perceives the geometry of the peephole as the entry to tunnel/burrow of prey, and awaits dinner to emerge.
Wow, you guys are good. Found this ID Request and from reading it, it seems like they like to fill holes with mud...luckily my peephole is convex.

I would think this is a chlorion lobatum from the colors.
This looks similar to the ones we see congregate on our garage. We can get pretty close to look at them, but leave them be since they provide a good service to us. :) The only wasps I don't care for because they scare me out of my wits are those those go into our unoccupied bird boxes. I end up leaving the boxes open and quickly backing away, in case they might have an aggressive tendency. If only I could tell the alien yellowjackets which I would smash or something, from the native wasps.
