Magnolia "jane" tree (shrub)

Barbourville, KY

Hello everyone this is my first post and I apologize if I am not putting this in the right spot. I have a question about a Magnolia jane tree I just purchaced. I live in Kentucky zone 6b. I planted the tree in a sunny location that receives a full 6 hours plus of sunlight a day. The tree is a little over a foot tall. When I planted it...it had one white flower (still closed up)...now the flower petals have brown spots on it and never has opened and some of the leaves have brown spots on it. I am worried that it may have some sort of fungus that will spread to other plants in the same area (about 2 feet away). Can someone please let me know if I what I should do to help this little tree have a good start at life.
Thank you all so very much for any information you can give.

Hello fellow Kentuckian, from the fine community of Barbourville (Bar-vull to non-locals)!

You shouldn't be worried about your new plant. You don't say when exactly you planted this 'Jane' Magnolia, but I suspect that you've had a cold snap since it was installed and the bud/flower and leaves are showing some damage from that.

None of these will be transmissable to adjacent plantings. Treat your new young tree as you would any new planting: keep weeds off of it, water it during drought periods, and wait for it to grow to maturity while you enjoy all that it seasonally offers.

Aside: I once knew a young woman (Vicki) from Barbourville of the family that operated the community funeral home. If you know them, say hi for me.
