Bright Barked Tree

East Bridgewater, MA

No leaves out yet but this tree has been driving me nuts as I drive by it twice a day to work, so I snapped a few shots from my car. Not sure if it's enough to ID yet, but thought I'd give it a try.

I'd close my eyes and say: Acer griseum!

Imagine the Beatles song, and sing "Paperbark Maple"...

I've had that song in my head all night as that's what I thought this was! lol..

I just didn't think there was enough flaking to be confident about it. That probably happens as the tree matures though.

Thanks! VV!

Look for the opposite arrangement of branches, twigs, buds - and leaves when they emerge.

There is almost nothing else that remotely looks like this - that would be found growing in Massachusetts. There are a few hybrid maples that include Paperbark Maple as one of the parent species, but this has the standard hallmarks of species Acer griseum.

Take some pictures while standing next to it instead of driving by, if you want to have absolute confidence in the ID.
