I'm in Sacramento, CA and I found these in my garage yesterday. The outer layer of silk is pretty flimsy... Not like widow silk, more like fibers from a cotton ball. Any idea what kind of spider left these??
Spider eggs?
Did you see any spiders in the vicinity? I've seen similar egg sacs attributed to brown recluse spiders, but that species does not occur in your area.
No, no spiders that I saw. We do have black widows but I think the outer sheath of the egg sacs would be a lot stronger than what these are. We also have a lot of orb weavers around but I really haven't seen any spiders yet this spring...
They definitely do not look like typical orb weaver egg sacs to me, either...
Well, crud!! I really hope they're not black widow eggs!! We also have those beautiful "jumping spiders"...they're black with white spots...sometimes their "fangs" are greenish...We had a HUGE one not too long ago that scared the crud out of me but fascinated me too...lol. Thank you...I'm keeping them in a plastic critter keeper but I'm thinking if they hatch, they might be able to escape it. If I don't know what they are, that might not be a good idea. One sac (the top one in the photos above) doesn't look very good but the bottom one still looks "healthy"....ok...too many quotes now, I'm done. Have a good one.,...
I am not familiar with spider egg sacs at all, though I know there are some up near the ceiling of my porch. They were there this winter, so not sure if they are viable or not.
Doing a quick search I found this page, but it only has a few.

My skin is now crawling!!! This is what they look like a week later. One sac is viable, one is clearly alive and crawling with baby spiders. My husband thinks they're a harmless brown spider that we have a lot of but just in case, the critter keeper is now in a plastic bag (with air). I'm dying to see what they are!!
