Is it too late to plant cucumber, tomato, and pepper seeds now or will I just about make it if I germinate them in my airing cupboard and then transfer them to the greenhouse?
Planting Seeds
Do you plan on growing them in the greenhouse? If so, why not germinate them there, planted in the containers(?) or wherever you intend them to grow?
I only have experienced growing Chili from seeds and been growing Chili plants ( various variety ) for 7 years now. The one i've germinated ( various variety ) last January died off ( i went on holiday for a month - so seedlings were dried off ) so i decided to germinate another batch enlist week of March with much success this time.
Heres how i successfully germinate my chili seed
1. Your chili seeds must be fresh ( if not a year fresh from last years harvest ).
2. You need a plastic zip lock airtight bag, handful of perlite , 500 ml mineral water ( any generic brand ) and 5 ml Hydrogen Peroxide ( Clear Solution ) 10% Volume ( you cannot buy it over the counter on a Pharmacy Store here in UK so i ordered mine online ). Pair of Gloves ( to protect your hands from burning effect of Hydrogen Peroxide - you have to handle it carefully ).
3. Mix Hydrogen Peroxide with Mineral Water. Moisten ( make sure it's not dripping wet ) the perlite and place the perlite inside the Zip Lock Plastic Bag. Put about a dozen of Chili seed on the perlite bag and zip, shake, label the bag - chili variety and date of germination and store in warm location ( i kept mine on airing - boiler cupboard ) and check the bag for signs of germination after 4 - 5 days. Sometimes it will take about 7 - 14 days to germinate defending on the chili variety.
4. Once the seed sprouted plant them ( 1 seed on 1 pot ) on small pots with seedling soil media ( i use John Innes seedling + perlite ) Place on a sunny window or under plant light.
5. When the true leaves appear i start feeding it with a weak seaweed - water solution.
6. You can transfer it on a bigger pot or plant outside after the last frost. I usually plant the seedling up to the cotyledons ( 1st 2 seed leaves ) as roots grow under it.
7. Regular feeding with very weak solution of seaweed - water once weekly during the growing season.
