I have seen these in 2 locations of less than 1 mile from each other. Both times were late summer. Both locations were at a stream and had features much like a miniature cave at the waters edge, like a rocky cut out behind a cascading area of the stream where the water did not flow in or fill up or where a rotten hollowed out log at the waters edge is found, both streams were very shallow but had year round water flow
