Reduced vigor of Okame cherry tree after severe scale infest

Baltimore, MD

One year ago, my Okame cherry tree branches were nearly covered with scale before I noticed it. I did notice fewer blossoms though. Until then, the 10-year-old cherry tree had been a puffy cloud of pink each spring. My landscape company treated it first with hort. oil and later with a systemic pesticide. This spring, the tree is NOT covered with blossoms as it had been for years. The blooms are sparse and its branches and limbs are easy to see through the spaces where more blooms should be.

I wonder: 1) what can I do or have done to encourage the recovery of my beautiful cherry tree to its former grandeur?

2) also can it recover fully from the scale damage or is its beauty forever compromised?

Any relevant experience or wisdom on this subject will be much appreciated.

I don't have any experience with cherry trees but I have gotten scale on hollies before. It sounds like your hort company had a good approach to the problem. You might want to have them continue with the systemic this year and for the next couple just to ensure the problem doesn't come back. As for your blooms, if the infestation was as bad as you say, it might take a season or two to recover. Since this only happened last year, I would assume it's still recovering.

Do not assume that all of the scale are gone. Keep treating the tree. My favorite spray is Azamax. It works very well. Also use it as a soil drench around the base/root of the tree. Gene
