I Dmailed Happy a while back and told her I hoped she could come. She said I could put her down as a "maybe", which I did.
Happy, we hope you come!
FIRST FLOWERS OF SPRING 2015 DOUBLE TAKE
I have "my" first ever Epimedium flowers now. thanks to ...ssgardener? sadly I cannot remember who gave it to me last year!
What color are they?
I have my first ever epimedium flowers, too! It looks like I lost about two of them this winter, though.
I think I got one of them from... Aspenhill? I also bought some last year.
pale yellow, leaves are edged with hints of maroon..could have been aspenhill? LOL another Terri
The epimediums I had at the swap last year have pinkish/purple flowers. Happy has yellow epimediums, maybe it was her?
I love epimediums - great in the shade, easy to grow, and deer leave them alone. It is hard to find them at local nurseries, and when you do, it is usually limited to 'Lilafee' and roseum. I found a great mail order place that specializes in them, and have a large sampling coming sometime this spring. If you want to see the number of epimedium cultivars that are out there, check out the online catalog.

These are called May apples, right? I only have a couple. I wish they'd spread!
I love this combo of daff, Heuchera, big root geranium, and muscari.
Creeping phlox almost at peak.
Tiny tulipa tarda, double daff, and Korean spice viburnum bloom that hasn't opened up yet.
Japanese pieris and bleeding heart.

Yes, those are May apples.
You've got some really lovely plant combos there! I really like those phlox colors together. I wouldn't have picked those as compatible colors, but they sure are!
Aspenhill, wonderful site thanks for the link. One of my Epimediums was up but not blooming before we left.
Nice pics SSG! My creeping phlox is still just waking up; definitely not even close to blooming.
lovely, ssg!
my pink is in bloom and blue not quite, but then pink might be a degree or two warmer and sunnier.
Lol Muddy, I don't think I had planned to put those two phlox colors together. They were planted farther apart, but then I got a beautyberry and had to move the phlox around when they weren't in bloom, so the blue and pink phlox got all mixed up.
I *try* to plan ahead, but the layout looks so different in your mind vs actually in your garden. And new acquisitions (edit: and deaths!) mess up all of my careful planning. :D

“To a Mouse,” by Robert Burns : “The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft a-gley.”
Because of all the editing, etc. I now rely on 'happy accidents' and rejoice when that happens. Hehehe. Usually it doesn't.
Pretty bleeding hearts.
Kerria next to a Japanese maple 'viridis' that I got in Oregon last summer and thought I killed as we travelled the country.
Flowering quince 'Firestorm'. Just opening up.
pretty, Jan. Is it double Kerria? I'm loving my single one, first year of significant bloom.
Oh, Kerria! That's what I've been seeing around here!
What a pretty yellow flower.
Sally, don't think that is the double Kerria. I ran out as it started raining a took a photo of the blooms of our Kerria japonica 'Pleniflourea'. On my way back in I took a shot of a small patch of Bluets - Houstonia caerulea in bloom, and a couple of pots on our deck of Early Saxifrage - Saxifraga virginensis.
oh, pretty, David. thanks for braving the rain
We have lots of bluets in a park near here.
Hehehehe, sallyg, the kerria came from you. It is single. A pretty yellow.
haha too funny! I like the green stems.
That reminds me... I need to see if there are some extra root-shoots of my double Kerria japonica (from Orchidfancy) that I can dig & share...
I'm so excited by "first blooms" on a couple of my younger shrubs, especially one lilac that's budding up for the first time and might (judging by the bud color) be the white one from Hart...
Jill, I finally had a cluster of bloom in hart's white lilac last year, divine scent.
I like that Quince Jan. They have such a nice flower color. It's a welcome change from the traditional pastels and white of the season.
GT, I just got a 'Pleniflora' from Forestfarm last week. I'm going to plant it on the north side of the house in full shade. It's blooming now in the pot.
Seq, I tend to lean toward the hotter colors.
Yeah I hear you Jan. Quince came up on my radar a year or two ago but I remember reading there is often some issue with it like rust or something. I didn't feel like having to deal with it. I can't remember specifically what it was though.
I love trilliums. The yellow one is next to geranium Espresso, which is from last year is group buy.
This wood poppy seeded itself between the bricks of my (poorly constructed) compost bin!
I've had this Bergenia for almost 3 years and it's blooming for the first time!
Epimediums are so pretty but the blooms are teeny and don't last very long.
SSG, Thanks so much for posting the pic of the geranium Espresso. Mine came up just a little spot before we left and for the life of me I couldn't figure out what it was. I remember thinking it looked like a geranium but it still didn't ring a bell for me. Now I remember what a striking plant it was.
Holly, I noticed this afternoon that they (edit: geranium 'Espresso) all have flower buds on them. :) They might be ready to bloom for you by the time you come back from FL!

My yellow trillium was just getting ready to bloom when we left I doubt it will last till we get home. Not sure about the red one I didn't see that one before we left but it is in deeper shade and may just not been ready to peek out.
Holly, I don't think I was clear in my last post. The geranium 'Espresso' is ready to bloom! They have the cutest little pink flowers.
You've got some pretty flowers. I love how that wood poppy seeded itself where it did!
New thread here:

I think I first saw Epimediums blooming in Happy's back yard, although the showier bleeding hearts were getting most of the attention. The foliage is so attractive, with its wiry stems... must try again to start some here.
There must be a thousand daffodil blooms out back, probably more... and that's after the kids came over again this afternoon and went home with armfuls.
I've tried to get landscape shots, but they just don't look like the reality of the beds in bloom... mostly I end up taking close-ups. Also, in closer shots you can't see all the "in progress" stuff LOL.
The pink-flowered Magnolia is 'Ann'... The double yellow daff is 'Apotheose', worth growing even if it tends to flop... who cares, just cut the blooms for boquets! My main perennial bed is bisected by a pathway. On one side, I've filled it with double daffodils, and on the other side I planted butterfly (split-corona) daffodils. The scent is amazing!
Everything looks great! The only other time I've seen your yard was during the bulb pick-up last fall.
That's nice of you to let the kids pick your daffodils. Do they come back and cut back the foliage for you? ; - )
LOL... I'm thinking if I can convince them that developing green seedpods are good "potion" or "salad" ingredients, they might do some deadheading for me.
They do have to stay on the grass or on the paths... I know where the peony and lily shoots are likely to be, but it's not obvious to anybody else. And really, I can't think of a better fate for daffodils than to be picked by kids!
Sally, where's the new thread police? LOL
Haha...you're too much!
Your gardens look beautiful Critter
i can make a new thread but not tonight, but you started this this one Seq
I already made a new thread last night.
