Mall Tree

East Bridgewater, MA

This Spruce(I think) tree stood out with it's very long needles and "frizzy" look. I couldn't find any cones. This was taken with a cheezy Ipod camera.

Is this just another White Spruce or something a little different?

You do not have a Spruce (Picea sp.) there.

That's a Concolor or White Fir - Abies concolor.

If you had fondled it, you'd have noticed how soft the needles are (differentiates most Firs from most Spruces, which are sharp to the touch). You would also notice that its needles have a most pleasant citrusy aroma when pinched/crushed.

Another separating feature: grayish twigs versus brown when compared with Spruce.

No reproductive features, but the cones would be dead giveaways too. Upright on branches for Fir; hanging down on Spruce.

The needles WERE softer than the average Spruce, but not as soft as only other fir tree I'm familiar with: the Balsam Fir (which are like blankets). I'll be comparing more Balsams from now on looking for a possible White.

Cool, thanks for your help VV.
