CLOSED: Stick insect like Australian insect

Sydney, Australia

Hi everyone, this beauty was chilling a few meters from our house in the bush. It was about 10 cm long. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks anyway!!
Cheers,

This appears to be a grasshopper in the family Pyrgomorphidae; likely in the genus Psednura - see https://sanatureteers.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/markoliphantcp-2014-10-11-img_4369-dutkiewicz.jpg for an example.

Wow! That's a strange grasshopper! Then again, most fauna in Australia is really different from the rest of the world. Would love to visit there.

Thanks a lot Flapdoodle! My girlfriend and I have spend quite some hours trying to identify it, without success. When I tried to make a picture of it, it was constantly moving to the side of the stem opposite to the camera. Great to read this is general behaviour when they try to hide!
Thanks again!

You're welcome. There are some other orthopteroid insects as well as some spiders (especially jumping spiders) that also exhibit this behaviour...
