Hello everyone, so happy to find this thread! About three days ago hundreds of winged (flies?) appeared in my yard in several areas. Brown, no longer than small fingernail, wings slightly longer than body, wasp-like waist, six legs (i think), nesting in the ground (soil fairly dry), away from house. They don't bite, but I'm insanely curious as to what they may be. Doesn't look like termite, or fungus gnat. I'm posting a pic, and hope you can help. You may have to zoom in for detail. Thank you!
Winged Pest Identifier
This appears to be one of the small, ground-nesting bees in the family Halictidae (sometimes called 'sweat bees')...
