Anyone successfully grown apple in southeast Texas? Just bought 3in1 apples tree combo. Supposed to be low chill varieties. Please tell me I didn't just wasted $60.
apples in the south
I don't see why apples would grow in TX. You would need to give the plant plenty of water on a consistent basis though.
Anyway, part of becoming a great gardener is trying new things to see how it works.
Our summer is too hot, humid, with lots of pests. Winter is very short, probably not enough chill hours for apple trees. Why would I want to grow apple? Store bought fruits are tasteless & apple blossoms are one of the most beautiful.
I find the fruit where my parents live in Phoenix is also tasteless. I love the fruit at the store in our area though. It tastes great.
Chill hours is a critical factor in choosing fruit varieties for warm climates. And if you have cedar trees nearby, you can wind up with cedar-apple rust, which will ruin the crop.
