Weird bug. What is it?

I found a massive bug that looks kind of like a caterpillar, except much fatter, after one of my chicken found it and was about to eat it. it has a spike/ horn sticking out of the top of it's rear end. Please identify. Thanks.

Does look like a caterpillar. Australia has some impressive critters! The chickens would probably find that one delicious!

It's a caterpillar of a sphinx moth, possibly this one (privet hawk moth caterpillar) - http://australianmuseum.net.au/image/privet-hawk-moth-caterpillar-on-leaf
Note: Some species of sphinx moth caterpillars change color shortly before undergoing pupation.
