Identification of caterpillar

Victoria, Australia

Hi Everyone,
I live in Northern Country Victoria, Australia.
Today I noticed my dog chasing a snake, so I run over and noticed that it's impossible for it to be a snake, it was far too slow moving. It looks like a caterpillar except about thirty centimetres long, I'm no expert but it seems far too large.
I quickly tied up my dog who was still trying to get at it and only had time to take a snap of the big guy as he was going under the house. In the photo, it's only a quarter of his actual size, he is light green, under the garden hose and a bit to the right of the air conditioner footing.
I am not at all concerned, critters don't frighten me, just very curious.

It looks like the caterpillar of some kind of sphinx moth - see http://australianmuseum.net.au/image/privet-hawk-moth-caterpillar-on-leaf for ab example, and suspect that you have overestimated its length...
