Looks like some species of chafer beetle, but I have no idea of what lurks in Australia. One of this forum's experts will likely be along later with more detailed information.

It is indeed a beetle in the family Scarabaeidae; it may take a native of Australia to pin a specific i.d. on it (this is a huge family)...
