Eeek! Anyone know this thing?

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Found many of these about an inch down just now in Central California amoungst the seed shells where we feed birds. Goodie? Baddie? Dead? In the oven? Thank you in advance for your knowledge and willing to identify these guys!

Basically neutral - They're larvae of soldier flies (family Stratiomyidae), scavengers on decomposing organic matter.

I would think that the birds would like them.

Thank you!!!!!

That's a win, black soldier flies would be very beneficial for controlling pest in the garden.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I am a huge fan of black soldier flies in the summer compost- make quick work of the kitchen waste and NO fungus gnats or 'houseflies' around.
