I'm hoping these harmless but we need to figure out what they are and where they are coming from. We will see them time from time in our basement. Our basement is unfinished.
CLOSED: We see these flies in our basement, help!
Could be a winged ant, but image not clear enough to say much more...
They look like ants to me.
Definitely ants - the geniculate antennae are clearly seen in the later images.
Thank you! What kind of ants though? Are they wimged carpenter ants? Or citronella? Should I be calling pest control?
They do look like one of the yellow ants in the genus Lasius, such as Lasius interjectus (aka citronella ant) - see http://www.alexanderwild.com/Ants/Taxonomic-List-of-Ant-Genera/Lasius/i-Gfw2W6N
They do not appear to be serious pests, and calling in a pest controller should not be necessary - http://ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/citronella-ants
Thank you so much for the confirmation and for the links!! Very relieved! I was really worried this could be something else. I will try to locate the nest just for nuisance control!
Thanks again.
