Hello. We have cut down an old cherry tree to the ground two years ago, but a couple of branches sprouted out from the tree stump. It grew leaves but no fruits. I noticed that there are roots (look like roots) coming out from the branches (close to the ground, but on branches). I'm thinking of cutting the branch and start another plant. Will I be doing the right thing?
Roots on cherry tree branches
It depends on what kind of cherry it was-
if it was a flowering cherry, or pie cherry, they are usually grafted varieties. A grafted tree means a pretty or useful top was stuck on a sturdy but not pretty trunk, and they grew together. Often even when a grafted tree is not cut down you will get new sprouting branches coming up, from below the graft. These are called "suckers". Generally the tree owner removes them. But yes you can cut them off and grow them, but they won't be the pretty kind you had before. It will be the same as the "rootstock"..
If you had some kind of native cherry that grew from a seed, like a Black Cherry, then the sprout will be the kind you had before.
Often if people want to make a new tree and they have a sprout, they will mound up some earth so the roots will have something to grow in, then cut it off the next year. You can do this on purpose, with some kinds of trees.
Do you know what kind of cherry it was?
