A friend of mine came across this guy in his shop. We live in the pacific northwest. The thing about this guy is his tail would come up around its back like a scorpion, if agitated. The picture shows the tail in the defensive position. any help would be great. Thanks

This is a large rove beetle (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), a beneficial general predator on other arthropods. The tail is completely harmless, but its jaws could give you a nip if you handled it carelessly...
