I'm having trouble finding high quality brown peat moss to make my own Eliot Coleman style seed starting mix.
The stuff that is sold at Big Box stores is quite dusty and has sticks.
I looked at a few companies websites, and they all sell higher quality stuff to professionals through representatives and use the higher quality stuff for their mixes which I imagine makes them more money.
I live in Virginia (southwest area). The garden centers don't have Peat right now.
I just wanted to hear what you all thought the best companies are, the line which you think is the best for the above reasons (given many companies have retail and multiple professional grades, and where you get it from.
Hope this helps people,
Name the best companies for PREMIUM Brown Peat Moss
I've always been happy with Fafard but don't know who sells it in your area.
I use
5 pine bark fines
1 sphagnum peat
1 perlite
2 tsp - 1 tbsp. dolomite (garden lime) per gallon or 1/3-1/2 cup per cu ft
I sow seeds on top of the mix, then cover with peat (1/8-1/4") & keep the mix 'damp only'.
Works much better than any seed starting mix I've ever used, and the seedlings love the added aeration offered by this mix.
