Yourr Neck of the Woods 2015 Part1

That cake is just too cute. LOL

Just thinking here, I wonder if Boston could host the Iditarod instead of a Saint Patrick's Day parade. LOL They have more snow than Alaska.

We're probably going to Timonium for the garden show today and may stop at the York one on the way home.

Yehudith, I was wondering why you were disappointed by the Phila Show? Was it just this year in comparison to other years? Ric and I noticed that some of the plant material on the big displays wasn't in the best shape. Looked like maybe they got a bit frosted coming in, not enough to ruin the effect for us but noticeable.

If anyone is planning to go to the Timonium show, you may want to reconsider. It was a lot less impressive than last year, and if you were there 2 years ago, it was not the same place. The orchid show was crammed into the food court and the display gardens were greatly diminished. A few of them were decent and well done, but over all "fagetaboutit".

We are leaving soon for the York show, so we will see.

Holly I noticed the same thing. Stuff just didn't have that fresh pop. Now I have to admit I did love the woodland garden with all the hellebores. The Chinese garden was beautiful too but did you notice the tree peonys were losing their petals as you looked at them. Did you see the junk yard garden? The one with the chickens (live ones) and the rusted out cars? It reminded me of some of the back (and front) yards of some houses where I grew up. I think the problem was the theme being Hollywood or maybe it was just me. Most of the shows I've been to have been in Europe and they just do it up if you know what I mean. There are the food and wine and artisan vendors of course but the plants and gardens are what take center stage.. I felt this one was more of a crafts fair in some ways.

One of our local high end 'garden' stores, actually, our highest end, you have to walk through a big store of decor and home stuff before you can find any green plants. I guess it makes the money.

Poor landscapers who made a junkyard garden- I admire the creativity, but is that a great way to advertise their skills for new clients...? Maybe they accented the junk with choice plants.

Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville Maryland will be having their "Celebrate Maryland" Flower Show March 13 - 22. They will feature four native landscapes:shore, rural, urban, and mountain, plus workshops (Baltimore Bonsai, organic lawn care, Watershed Stewarts Academy, and Green Goats!

Any one want to meet up there?

Sally, there is a tradition of 'art cars' called 'garden cars' The one at the Philly Show featured various mosses, etc.

Here are just a few examples

"The car is great fun to drive. People stare in drop-jaw amazement. When I think they're looking, I'll switch on the fountain or sprinkler and watch a big smile grow on their faces. It's nice having people smile and wave as they drive past. I think I've gotten over 2,000 smiles to the gallon maybe more. I drive the car to work every day and to date, have not had one negative comment."

Philly Flower Show exhibit based on movie "Cars" description

Burke Brothers Landscape Design/Build
Location: Show Floor Hall A Front
Description: Root 66
This year’s exhibit offers a true behind-the-scenes look at a
landscape design studio celebrating its 25th year in
business. Visitors are able to enter the office and observe
staff hard at work on spring design projects. The studio is
set in a ‘junkyard garden’ reminiscent of Tow Mater’s Towing
& Salvage from the Disney•Pixar movie, “Cars.” The exhibit also
showcases the company’s growing permaculture hobbies,
including beekeeping and raising backyard chickens

We spent the day at the Pa. Garden Show of York. It was a fun day. There where 10 small but nice display gardens, good vendors, a friend did a lecture on Greenhouse's this morning. One of the things I like best about this show is that there is a Garden Club sanctioned Flower Show. It's not a real big show but we always find it very enjoyable.

Yehudith, The Philly Show is the biggest show I have ever been too. I am always impressed with it. I see some displays that aren't much to my taste but over all I love it.
The first time I went I was thinking I would get ideas for my gardens and I have come home with some great ideas. The first show I went to was a real eye opener. There were sun loving plants displayed next to shade plants. Succulents planted around the water features and tropical mixed with perennials. I quickly realized that I wasn't going home with a template to create a beautiful garden of my own. Rather that finding little gems here and there that I could use and new and interesting plants to look up later.
Here is Tow Mater's Garden, I thought it was cute. I will admit that I have pulled a few old fenders and car hoods out of the hedgerow next to the lane many years ago and at the time I didn't find them picturesque at the time. LOL
