I recently bought a house and inherited 6 huge fruiting quince bushes. They are lovely but terribly overgrown. I have no idea where to begin to cut them back. Last year they made over 60 pounds of fruit, but they were so overgrown that the dormant oil I sprayed on them was ineffective at keeping the pests away, so I need to tame them to keep them in good health - any advice?
How to prune a flowering quince to produce the best fruit?
I have no specific knowledge here but here's my guess. Using general advice on woody shrubs, you should try to take out some of the oldest branches, to thin the growth, probably no more than a third of the total is best at one time.
