All last summer here in central Gulf coast Florida, it seemed that every time I would bend down to weed there was a high pitched sound between a mosquito and bee as some mystery flier tried to fly into my ear! There were frequent collisions, but I never actually saw the critters. Apparently they tend to fly about two feet above the ground and are simply not good at watching where they are going, as they never bit or stung - just annoyed.
On the other hand, if I walked around in the sandy areas there were little fliers - maybe 1/8" - 1/4" - that I could never catch to get a look at - very quick - who zigzagged constantly, always apparently between 2 to 8 inched above the ground. This was mostly in areas with nothing but occasional low weeds, not much flowering but the crimson climber vine, and I never noticed them particularly near those - no idea what they fed on.
I realize this might be a long shot, but I was hoping someone familiar with the region and terrain - very sandy, not much grass of any sort - might recognize these mystery fliers by behavior. One year in the area, still leaning! ;-)

I have no idea about either ID but we have the same "sand fliers" here in Texas near the gulf. I hope someone knows.
