Sounds like quite a score with the freebies from your family!
PLANT ADDICTS CHAT #5
My hellebore connection in NC is a dear friend of my FIL's. The ones I brought back are "ordinary" dusky violet-rose.
Your double one is lovely! There are a couple of named varieties that would fit the description, but since there are also "seed strains" of double hellebores, it's hard to say with certainty. Google for helleborus, double blooms, picotee edge, and you should find some possibilities. I know one of the "Winter Jewels" series looks like that... 'Peppermint Ice' or 'Rose Quartz' maybe?
Pine Knot Farms has a double "Southern Belles" series, too. http://www.pineknotfarms.com/helleborus-x-hybridus-pine-knots-southern-belles-double-picotee/
I'm hoping the quince "takes," as it's one of dad's favorites. It also turned out to be the perfect compliment to the coral-pink of "pink" daffodils... I planted some in front of it last fall, and they look amazing together.
I checked out this site--it has pictures of a zillion Hellebores.
The one closest to mine--but just in color--was called "Double Queens Mix" or Harlequin.
except the petals on mine are pointed. The Queens Mix" ones were rounded.
The fancier ones are wayyyy down the list. Gita

edited to say---
I just looked at the above site again. If nothing else--you can find out the names
of all the Hellebores. G.

One cool thing about the double hellebores... if they self-sow, I've heard the double blooms are likely to come true in most of the seedlings, especially if you have only doubles in that area.
So... I just posted on the swap discussion thread, because my car is full of hellebores in gallon pots... freshly marked down to $5 and I got them for $3 each at Lowes! Anybody wanting to share the bounty of 'Pink Frost' (love the blue-silver leaves), LMK. I figure 5 or 6 for me, 3 for my MIL, and that leaves 9 available.
I brought home:
18 'Pink Frost'
5 'Cinnamon Frost'
3 'Mahogany Snow'
3 white ones named after some guy LOL
1 'Merlin' (not as deeply discounted at $12 but I wanted it)
Not a double among them, but all the pretty single ones I saw blooming in NC have me very appreciative of any hellebore!
Jill, I'll commit to 3 'Pink Frost', Pat will love them.
I'll put your name on them. They're really good looking plants.. you know I cherry-picked the nicest ones! Unless she says otherwise, I figure Terri will want 3 or more also.
I posted on other thread for 5 - 6 Pink Frost and 2 Cinnamon. Willing to take 'lesser looking plants if you think your Lowes has more and you can get same deal??Thanks.
WOW! I'd love 2 or 3 'Pink Frost.'
I guess I need to stop by my local Lowe's soon. :)
The manager told the cashier to mark the remaining plants down to $5. I was in the right place at the right time! If anybody wants more at the $5 price, I can probably stop by and look again tomorrow after I go to the Y.
Meanwhile, it's looking like we should spread the love with the $3 plants -- what a steal! Say, 3 Pink Frost and 1 'Cinnamon Frost' (if wanted) per person?
'Pink Frost' hellebores as follows (Pat passed):
3 plants for Terri
3 for Coleup, plus 1 'Cinnamon Frost'
3 for SSG
There were mostly 'Pink Frost' left on the Shelf, maybe a dozen, plus a few Cinnamon Frost. I think I snarfed up the Mahogany Frost and white ones whose name I can't remember... but there might be one or two remaining. And while I did sort through for the biggest/fullest plants, all of them looked good. Taking orders! :-)
I know $5 isn't as good a deal, but it's still a great price.. if I go back to pick up more, I will see if I can get a deeper discount, but don't count on that.
Critter, I'd love a 'Cinnamon Frost' as well if there's an extra!
The really neat characteristic of the Frost series is that unlike other Hellebores, the Frost blooms face upward! They also are suited to growing in containers according to Carolyn's Shade Gardens.
Jill, I'm pleased as punch with the share the love four as above....However, I'd also like to get
3 Pink Frost
2 additional Cinnamon Frost
1 Mahagony
1 White
But, no pressure! Wow, a car full of blooming Hellebores!

Coleup, just to check, those extras are ones you're willing to pay $5 each for?
SSG, the 2nd "extra" Cinnamon Frost was already claimed, but I'll see how my planting goes... depending on how I place them, I might end up with 1 each available on Cinnamon Frost, Mahogany Snow, and the white one (I'll bring in its tag so I know its name!)...
Jill, if you still have any Pink Frost left, I'll take one plant. If you don't have any at the $3, I'll take one at the $5 price. LMK.
I checked out that website Gita. It looks like they have some really nice things but it'd probably be best if we organized a group buy because they have a lot of fees and such for US orders. It also mentions they consolidate US orders and ship every 4 weeks.
Jill, if you can get their remaining stock of Frost series Hellebores for $3 like yesterday (Take in your receipt so they can use the 'code' for purchase at $3 in case same manager isn't there today) I'd go $60 for twenty plants or so. How's that for plant addictness! LOL
at $3
10 + Pink Frost
6 + Cinnamon Snow
2 + Mahagony
2 + White
if only avail at $5 discount please add
3 Pink Frost (3@$3 + 3@$5 = 6) and
2 Cinnamon ( 1@$3 + 2@$5 = 3.
Thanks, and happy procuring!
If I can get them for $3 I'll get everything that's left. But I think the manager was re-thinking that offer after she made it, because she said I could have them at that price but then the rest would be old at $5. So yesterday's override code might not help. If I offer to take all leftovers, that might bring it down. I'll see.
There might not be any left by this afternoon, either.
Jill, I checked out my local Lowes, and the hellebores were $15-20! D: You got such a great deal!
I did pick up a Chamaecyparis from HD today, and will go back later this week for a 'Jane' magnolia. I was going to buy 'Jane' from Meadows Farms, but they didn't have any single trunks like the ones at HD. I think I prefer the tree form.
I saw several multi-trunked 'Jane' magnolias at Lowes... want to say they were $35 or $40... will have to check HD and see what they have. I have a multi-trunked little 'Ann' that I got several years ago at the spring garden show in Leesburg - very similar and so pretty!
Leesburg Flower & Garden Festival is next weekend... :-)

SS--So-- You did pick up a Chamaecyparis from HD today?
How about some common names for dummies like me-- you people?
I sure would like to know what you all are talking about.
It has gotten so common now that everyone just uses the Horticultural names.
I am totally lost! An I the ONLY one?
It would not take too much extra time to put the common name in parentheses.
PLEASE???? and Thank You!
G.
It only takes a moment to google, also. Chaemecyparis has several common names, making the botanical name less confusing. It's aka false cypress, japanese cypress, or hinoki cypress. Just calling it "cypress" would be even more confusing, as that brings up a bunch of additional possibilities!
I don't think Chamaecyparis has a useful common name. I've heard false cypress before, but that's a really confusing common name!
I know I am in the minority, but when I read through our Posts, and all I see is
horticultural names, i almost feel "abandoned"....like I cannot be part of
the ongoing discussions--I cannot say--"OH! HD has that!" as I do not know
what is being talked about.
If I have to Google something--that means i am leaving the DG screen I am on.
Sometimes, I can just hit "back" and get back to it. Sometimes I lose it--plus all my typed
communication. That is so frustrating--so I do not like to leave the screen I am on.
Then I have to go back to my desk top to pick it back up.
If I need further info. on something, I usually use the small "search" bar on
my top right tool bar. It is like regular Google--which I can only get to if I go to Firefox.
Maybe I should put the Google icon on my Desk Top? That would be quicker.
Will do that!
I am sure that you all who are more computer savvy have all kinds of other
ways to get to Google. I tend to go the route that I am familiar with.
May not be the fastest--but I know my way around with it.
BTW--Hinoki Cypress is one of my favorite shrubs--looks wise-- Love the wavy leaves..
G.
Firefox lets you open more than one "tab" in your browser... just click on that plus-sign near the top right corner, and you have a new page you can use for google or anything else. The tabs let you quickly switch back and forth between pages.
You can also open more than one "window" in Firefox. I have the Firefox icon ("shortcut") at the bottom of my computer screen, and it sort of stacks multiple windows there so I can click between them.
I know that doesn't help you with the names -- but it may help you navigate on the web. :-)
Hey G, no one wants to make you feel left out. I'm not sure what your computer setup is like but most web browsers, i.e Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc have the ability to use multiple tabs. A tab is basically a web page. You would have the ability to keep DG running, while looking at Google on another tab. This makes it very easy to look up something on another page while keeping a separate website running simultaneously. You would not have to hit a 'back' button using this method. If you have a laptop, you could bring it to the swap and I can show you what I mean.
Sometimes I wish there was a Daves Garden feature that would let us hover over a name or term with our cursors and if we clicked it, it would take us to the Plant Files page! where hopefully there would be Latin and common names, description, pics, and member comments!
That'd be a cool feature.
Thank you all for similar suggestions. I have used the "+" sign to open a new window.
Pat also suggested "cntr. plus "t:" to open a new tab as well.
The biggest problems I have is when I am trying to close all these extra tabs
I have opened. I often click on the wrong thing and then, everything goes "POOF"!
I will just muddle along--it would take less time for anyone to include a common name
then for me to go through all this Goggling and Extra tabs to find out what
something means.
I realize it would take you all an extra effort to do this--but HEY! common names
are usually much shorter than Horticultural names.....:o)
Up to you all....I'll deal with it... G.
G, you don't have to close the tabs. I usually just leave them go until I close the browser. Also, if you double click the botanical name and click CTRL and 'C', you can then hit CTRL and 'V' in Google. That is an easy shortcut to copy/paste.
You're right though, half the time I look up the hort name to post here but I do it to challenge myself. I would like to become better versed in hort names so by using them more often, some are starting to stick in the jumbled mess I call a brain. Plus, IMO you get better results when you Google the hort name than the common name to bring up info about a plant.
Thanks, Jeff. Another helpful idea.
I put the "Google" icon on my "Home Page".
Might expedite searching a bit too.
If you accidentally close a tab, you can usually get it back by going to "history" and choosing something like "recently closed tabs" to find it again. Sometimes you get whatever you were typing at the time back also, and sometimes not, but at least you find your place again!
AHA! Never used "history"----It is right up there!
I am getting smarter by the day.....Thanks, Jill.
Sometimes I don't know the common name.
Watch out G, if you learn one new thing you may forget two things you used to know...LOL
Jeff--LOL!!! How true...how true.....
Very nice Spicebush flower image! You should add that to PlantFiles...
Well thanks, I will! It took me a long time to get that shot.
