CLOSED: Fuzzy Fellows

(Zone 5a)

This little caterpillar hitch hiked on me, so I do not know its host plant. This photo was taken 26 August. Later, I found a similar looking fellow chomping down on the Rough Blazing Star. Taken 7 September.

The look different enough that I hesitate to think they are the same species. Whether they are the same or not, can anyone tell me who they might be?

I was fun seeing all the different bugs on my flowers this year and I decided to try to identify what I could. Some successes, but what is posted here have befuddled me.

I suspect that both are caterpillars of the salt marsh moth, Estigmene acrea - this is an extremely variable species, as you will see if you Google the name for caterpillar images.

Thank you! I looked up the insect and found the name can be deceiving. We are nowhere near a salt marsh. But neither are we near any swamp, but get Swamp Sparrows during migration. The adults of this caterpillar are pretty; I hope to see one of them some day.
