spring-flowering bulbs sending shoots up in fall

Auburn, AL

Some of my bulbs sent up leaves early this October. They bloomed last spring, and the leaves had long since died back. Not all the bulbs I planted last winter did this, but all the grape hyacinths (Muscari), spring starflower (Ipheion), narcissus, and even a couple of Atamasco lilies did. The blazing star and allium in that bed have not put out leaves. This happened 5 or 6 weeks ago, in just one of my flower beds. The other two beds were planted at the same time. It seems odd to have spring-flowering bulbs growing (no blooms) in early fall. I've left the leaves to grow, figuring they're making food, but the weather's turning colder now here in central Alabama, and I'm concerned about a possible early frost killing them. I'm not an experienced flower gardener. Is this normal? Should I do anything about it?

It's certainly normal for muscari. Don't worry - plants "know what they're doing"; they're responding as they should to the conditions, but they'll also bloom in spring, as expected.

I'm glad you posted....I noticed the same thing in my front bed where I have a lot of crocus and mustard and was wondering why the heck they were filling the bed with leaves. I learn so much from everyone here!
