I'm considering American Pillar Arborvitae for a fast growing hedge screen for my windows. I need 10-11' for full privacy. Does anyone have any experience with this variety? I have the specs (20-30' tall 3-4' wide) and growth rate(fast) but how tall will they need to reach to FILL IN at 10-11'? I'm having a hard time finding growers and master gardeners that have even heard of it much less have experience with a mature plant. It appears it was just removed from the "proven winner" list. I'm in Zone 7a and can get them at 4-6'. Any and all help appreciated.
Thuja Occidentalis 'American Pillar' Arborvitae
The lower you head them back, the faster they will fill in. I would plant them anywhere from 4-8' apart. I have a lot-long hedge of 'emerald' at 4' between, and I could easily have separated the plants at 5-6' between them. 'Pillar's' growth habit is horizontally more compact than 'Emerald.
