The retired life:

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

It was nine here this morning. We don't see sunshine until after twelve between these mountains. Home was forty five this morning with full sunshine and an expected high of sixty. I would love to be able to spend winters back home and live here spring through early fall. That would be heaven on earth. That way I would miss the mosquitoes and the humidity and I could garden all winter.

Bridgewater, ME

I do miss gardening come the middle of winter, but come fall I as so tired of taking care of all my gardens and mowing and weedwacking that I look forward to the rest.

What a great attitude!

Hi everyone, We got only 9/10 in. of rain, but are very proud of what we got.
Temps in the upper 70s, and lows in the 50s, so the weather has been very comfortable.
Our elder son and his wife are coming in onnext week, so we will spend several days in Austin, visiting with two sons and wives, one granddauter (4) and younger sons inlaws who are also going to be in Austin. My retiree hand will take care of the feeding, and checking for problems with the four first-calf heiffers that are about due to calve. The hired man has lots of experience and will tak care of feeding and any problems he sees. So we will be gone for three or four days ofR&R in the big city. Kids have a large home with plenty of bedrooms so itshould be a nice weekend. Sons FinLaw is a farmers son who is retired military pilot, and he and wife are really easy to get along with.
Watched a herd of twelve deer( including 3 nice bucks on the ranch today). They are getting quite centle now since we only watch and do not shoot them. I have quit hunting deer because it is too much work to process, and I cannot find processors who will do it to my standards.

Have a good week everyone.
Robert

I am so glad you will be able to enjoy a few days with your kids. Family is everything. Enjoy yourself and be careful.

Well, here is an update on my health. If you know me at all, you know I trust doctors as far as I can spit, so no, going to one wasn't an option I entertained. I did buy a blood pressure monitor though and low and behold my bp was sky high, it was peaking at 188/110. Not good, so I began to research an easy and effective way to bring it down. Landed on "water fasting" and am on my seventh day. My bp I just took was 146/90. That is not great but much better than before. I also feel better and more relaxed.

There are many benefits to water fasting. The claims are it can heal many diseases. I am not a newby to fasting, not at all. I am cheating a little bit by adding fresh lemon juice, peppermint tea and even Knudsen's cranberry juice. I always feel great when I fast after that third day. The food cravings pretty much stop after that. I think it must clear up my blood from the lupus for awhile. They claim that lupus is when the antibodies attack our own body cells. So maybe the antibodies aren't so hungry when I'm fasting. :) Here is a good video about water fasting if anyone is interested in this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ6Ifd9tjYM

So that is where I am. All my critters are fine. We are having record high temps, then plunge into the teens. Crazy weather. Love the warm days though. It was 80 a few days ago and most of the week in the 70s. Today it is cold and the wind is blowing.

Thanks for caring about me. I was kind of scared the other day when I wrote all that. So, thanks for being here for me. Much appreciated.

Glad you are doing better now - but bp is something to be careful self medicating.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

That is a scarey high BP. Stroke level. Please keep an eye on it and go to the doctor if it gets worse. That second reading is much better but still higher than it should be. Let us know how it goes. We do care.

I wish we had such nice warm weather but I know what you mean about the big temp swings. It happens every couple of days here. We get high fifties for a couple days and then into the teens. Looking at snow and single digits for the next few days. Spring cannot come soon enough for me. Take care everyone and stay warm.

My BP was high a couple years ago,my doc wanted me to start on BP pills,I said you know I don't like taking prescription drugs so I refused and start looking for an alternative.I started taking Hawthorn Extracts 1000 mg once a day.my BP has gone down and stays down.122/80 this week when I went in to see her.She wanted to know what I done and I told her,she said she knew it had properites for a healthy heart bout not BP,she said let me do some reading up on it,she likes natural if at all possible. She wrote me a hand written letter and told me that it can lower BP in some people, and I just happened to be one of them.I get my hawthorn and other things from Vitacost online, they are very trustworthy

(Zone 6b)

Thanks Green, Cajun and Kittriana. I did a sixteen day water fast and it did bring my bp down. Since I have been off the fast it has steadily increased again, but is not nearly as high as it was for awhile there. I don't feel nearly as bad as I did before the fast either. When I fast I feel great. I'm guessing that the ANA in my blood decreases when I am fasting. I start having energy and feel relaxed. It is great. Of course, there is that little bit of light headedness where I am not sure I am thinking right. Makes me nervous to drive or do anything important. I've never done anything strange that I know of, but the sensation is kind of like being out of body.

Green, I take Hawthorn Berries for my heart problems caused by lupus. I used to have some pretty severe chest pains, but after taking this product I quit having those. I've taken it for thirty years now. I am a firm believer in Hawthorn Berries for the heart and circulation. I don't know how it works, I just know it works for me.

You ladies are a blessing. Thanks again.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

So glad your BP is down. That is good news.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Just in from the ranch where I found a half inch of rain fell last night. Grass is beginning to grow pretty fast, and cows are not following the truck begging now.
In this county we always expect a cold spell at Easter, and an old saying "If it thunders in Feb. it will frost in April" would lead you to think we have one more frost coming this year, since it did thunder on Feb. 25.
We will just keep on keeping on, trusting the Good Lord will care for us all.

We are starting to green up too. It feels so good. But the weather channel is talking about snow for Saturday. My Momma always said if you can't say something good Don't say anything.

We have our church egg hunt and picnic planned for Saturday. Par for the course.

(Zone 6b)

My mother and grandmother would say, "If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all". Good and nice are similar, but good, well, that would seem to encompass not saying anything bad about anything on any subject, which would seem much more difficult. The "be nice" command came out when I would be tempted to talk about someone and be critical of them for whatever reason I had. Pretty irritating at times to hear that.

I believe there are some scriptures on this topic as well, but I cannot quote them. I know gossip is forbidden, but seems it even says not to talk about things done in darkness.

Yes, it is hard to always be nice. I am very thankful God forgives. LOL

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Here it is the third day of april and it is nice and warm, grass is growing well, and the hay broker brought 38 large round bales of hay..Hay is from Ark, and looks like really good hay.
Only thing left to do is pay him the $3220. bill. Am not feeding more now. but will have a supply ready for next fall, if our crop is short.
Two inches of rain last week, and ponds are near full, grass is growing, and cows are eating without being fed. All is well on the Nine-Bar Ranch right now.
We are off tomorrow to look at some

sheltie puppies. My wife really wants a dog, and maybe we can make peace between 6 cats and one pup.
Robert

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I am down to a few bales of hay and need to get another load. My supplier is out so I am beating the bushes for some more until he cuts again. I sure wish I had a bigger space to store more hay.

The grass is starting to green up here. We have green grass all year long but it does not start to grow until spring. I am fencing in New areas around the yard to let the ponies graze.

Enjoy the pup. Why did you decide on a sheltie?

Bridgewater, ME

I don't believe we will see green grass here this year, its snowing and blowing here and 30 degrees.Going down to -1 tomorrow night,YUCK. I have a sheltie mix,she is so good with the chickens, taught her as a pup that they are family members
