I took a walk around my in-laws' neighborhood and found this interesting fern-like tree. What is it?
Fernish Looking Neighborhood Tree
Hi Reefman, the second photo shows large buds at the base of the leaf. I believe thats a metasequyah (dawn redwood) . A beautiful fast growing tree,4 to 6 ft a year here if the deer don't eat them.
AND - those large buds are opposite in arrangement, which is the sure-fire way to ID this deciduous conifer and separate it from Taxodium sp.
Metasequoia glyptostroboides is Dawn-redwood's full name.
Cool! I've never found one on my own without being labelled already.
Thanks!
