Earlier today one of my Lhasa Apsos came running in from the garden, shaking her head, rubbing her eye area with her front paws, obviously in some distress. I saw what looked like a large black fly in the fur just above her eyes. I pulled it out and threw in on the ground, and it immediately started attacking me, trying to sting me. I managed to reach a can of fly spray and used that. After a few minutes it fell into the mop bucket which contained water and bleach and died. It looks a little like a wasp as it has yellow and black rings round its abdomen, but instead of being of equal size, the yellow stripes are very thin while the black stripes are very wide. Also, its head is completely black. The first photo shows the underneath of the insect, and the second, the top of it. I wonder if anyone could identify it, please.

I suspect that this most likely is Vespula vulgaris, known as the Common Wasp. See http://micropics.org.uk/Vespidae/Vespula/vulgaris/vespula%20vulgaris.jpg for an image (Note: The width of the yellow bands in this species is quite variable) and http://www.gardensafari.net/en_picpages/vespula_vulgaris.htm for detailed information.
Thank you, Flapdoodle. I have been looking at the links you gave me, and from what I saw on www.gardensafari, I think it is a Median Wasp (Dolichovespula media). The facial markings seem to be the same, and so much of it is black. What do you think?
Definitely another possibility - I could not see the facial features on your specimen clearly enough to make that distinction, and based my surmise primarily on its relatively small size...
